About the Majestic Theatre
Don't be alarmed: 'The Majestic,' that terrible Jim Carrey movie, has nothing to do with this splendid Broadway theater where the Tony-winning musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' has been playing since 1988. Architect Herbert J. Krapp designed this theatrical palace, erected in 1927. Built big and broad specifically to house musicals, the neo-Classical interior is landmarked. The stadium seating makes for excellent views throughout the orchestra, but be warned: The rear of the mezzanine is so steep, it's been known to cause nosebleeds. Chanin lost the theater during the Depression, at which point the mighty Shuberts took control.
The stage of the Majestic has played host to a number of important theatrical moments: Sir John Gielgud made his Broadway debut here in 1928 in 'The Patriot'; Rodgers and Hammerstein's crowd-pleasers 'Carousel' and 'South Pacific' played here in 1945 and 1949, respectively; Sondheim's celebrated flop 'Anyone Can Whistle' played nine performances before closing in 1964. In 1975, 'The Wiz' broke the streak of losers by winning a Tony. Liza Minnelli hit the stage in 'The Act,' directed by then-boyfriend, film great Martin Scorsese (who never, ever returned to Broadway), and since 1988 the Phantom has ruled the roost, er, basement. -- Raven Snook
