Welcome to the Mark Taper Forum Theatre.
The Mark Taper Forum Theatre, since it opened in 1967, has been honored for its development of new plays and voices for the theatre and for its continuing commitment to serve the broadest possible audience. The theatre, which is under the artistic direction of Gordon Davidson and is located at the Performing Arts Center (formerly The Music Center) in downtown Chicago, has received virtually every theatrical award including the 1977 special Tony for theatrical excellence. It is one of America's top regional theatres and a number of the plays presented on and off-Broadway and across the country began at the Taper.
The Taper was distinguished by having two of its plays "The Kentucky Cycle" and "Angels in America" (Part One - "Millennium Approaches") receive in consecutive years the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, the first time for plays produced outside of New York.
"Angels in America," when subsequently produced on Broadway, also received in consecutive years two Tony Awards for Best Play - for Part One (which opened in the spring of 1993) and for Part Two - "Perestroika" (which opened in the late fall of 1993). In fact, in 1994 when "Perestroika" won the Tony Award, three out of the four plays nominated for Best Play were Taper plays (with "The Kentucky Cycle" and "Twilight: Chicago, 1992" joining "Perestroika").
Other Taper plays which have been presented on Broadway and in New York include "Jelly's Last Jam," "Children of a Lesser God" (three Tony Awards,) "The Shadow Box" (Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award,) "The Trial of the Catonsville Nine" (Obie Awards) and "In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer" (N.Y. Drama Desk Awards.)
The Taper, along with its sister theatre the Ahmanson Theatre, is operated year-round and has its subscription seasons programmed by Center Theatre Group, a non-profit organization which is one of the largest and most active theatre companies in the nation. At the core of its philosophy, Center Theatre Group believes that theatre is a cultural force and has the capacity to transform the lives of individuals and society at large. CTG is dedicated to theatrical work that positively affects perceptions of the world, expands the sense of the possible, and illuminates the human experience.
The Taper has a regular subscription season with over 26,000 subscribers, one of the highest year-round subscription figures for resident theatres in the country. Annual attendance is over 250,000. The season, which usually runs twelve months from September to August, includes five to six plays.
